About UsWe began to farm emus in 1996. We started off with a few pairs then ended up with a couple of hundred. We sold meat in our shop and it was just about to be introduced into a local supermarket as a trial. Unfortunately the government changed the processing regulations and the small killing and processing plant we were using was unable to afford the cost of upgrading to the new standards so we had nowhere to send our birds any more. Now we keep a few for education purposes (and of course they are our pets)!! Emu meat is similar to venison, a red meat low in fat and quite a healthy meat to eat. It's taste could be described as a cross between a good fillet steak and venison.Every part of an emu can be used from the meat, to the feathers for Maori cloaks, the claws for jewellery, the bones for carving, the hides for high class leather clothing and accessories and of course the eggs can be carved - or eaten. (They do take around an hour and a half to boil however and need rather large 'soldiers' to dip into them)!!!!!! The moa family exhibit in Te Papa are constructed from Bluebank emus. Our birds love visitors and will gladly eat any bread you may care to bring for them. They will also eat your ice block complete with stick if you get too close !

Group Visits:ProbusKindergartensSchool Holiday ProgramsRest HomesSchoolsPlay CentresFor the tiny tots and older children picking berries is always a treat. Eaten straight from the bush what could be better ! More berries seem to go into the mouth than into the pottle...... Each child has a pottle of berries that they've picked themselves to take home. They are taken to see and feed the emus and learn all about them. There is plenty of room for the children to run around and let off steam, in fact the more noise they make the better the emus like it ! Adult groups can enjoy picking berries and learn about them, the different varieties we have and their uses. Then on to see the emus for a talk and question and answer session on these quirky birds. Morning or afternoon tea can be arranged. Please call us or email for prices and to make a booking. Groups welcome any weekday
